Dorm room essentials: what to pack
Bedding, a week of clothes, towels, and the soft extras that survive a stairwell. Housing already has the desk.

Dorm room essentials are the things a student uses in the first week: a bed they can sleep in, clothes for a week of weather, towels, and a small desk kit. Housing offices already supply a bed, a desk, and a chair. You do not need to pack furniture. A 24-gallon (91 L) bag, 27 × 15 × 14 inches, is sized for the soft pile. Rated load is 50 lb. The bag is waterproof, not submersible.
Dorm room essentials that belong in a bag
- Twin XL sheets, a comforter, a pillow, and a mattress topper if the school allows one.
- One week of clothes, plus a rain layer. Laundry is on campus; a whole closet is optional.
- Two bath towels, a hand towel, and a shower caddy that is soft-sided.
- A desk lamp only if it is not glass. Command hooks and a power strip if housing allows them.
- Toiletries in a sealed pouch. Leave full-size liquids for the first grocery run if you can.
- A small first-week kit: chargers, an ID lanyard, and any daily medication in its original bottle.
What to ask housing before you pack
Bed size is usually twin XL, which is longer than a twin from home. Lofts and bunks change how much fits underneath. A packed bag is 14 inches tall, so measure the clearance before you plan to slide one under the bed. Some halls ban hot plates, candles, and extension cords that are not surge protectors. Read that list before you buy duplicates.
Move-in day is stairs, elevators, and a short unloading window. Soft bags with wrap-around handles can be worn on the shoulders: stand the bag upright and slip both long handles over. There are no separate backpack straps. Lift with both handles together when you are not wearing it. Side handles only drag a bag out of the car.
A simple four-bag split
Bag one is bedding. Bag two is clothes. Bag three is bath and toiletries. Bag four, if you have it, is the desk and the rainy-day layer. Packs are a 2-pack or a 6-pack, so a 2-pack covers a light packer and a 6-pack covers bedding plus clothes for more than one student. Color-code with Cobalt Blue and Barbie Pink if two roommates are sharing a car.
Leave books you will not open in week one at home, or put them in a small box. A soft bag is a poor place for a dense textbook stack. The same is true for a mini fridge, a mirror, and anything glass. Those ride in the open trunk, not zipped in with a comforter.
After the room is set, empty bags fold to about 10 × 7.1 inches. Students keep them under the bed for the trip home, or zip winter clothes into them at the first cold week. Check campus storage rules before you leave bags over the summer.

The rest of a good move-in is habit, not a longer shopping list. Label the bag that should be opened first, keep daily medicine in the car, and leave a path to the bed. Parents who pack at home spend the hallway time carrying, not sorting. When the semester ends, the same bags fold flat or hold summer storage if the hall allows it. Read the housing note before you assume a bag can stay.
Week one, then the rest of the semester
Pack what gets used before the first laundry day. A week of clothes beats a whole closet, because campus laundry is the plan and the stairwell is the constraint. Bedding is the bulky piece: twin XL sheets, a comforter, and a pillow. A mattress topper goes in only if housing allows it and the zipper still closes. The bag is 27 × 15 × 14 inches, so a thick topper may need a bag of its own. Thickness decides the fit. If the teeth strain, it does not fit.
Toiletries ride in a sealed pouch. Full-size liquids can wait for the first grocery run if the bottle might leak on a comforter. A soft shower caddy is fine. A glass lamp, a mirror, and a mini fridge are not. Those stay in the open trunk. Books you will not open in week one stay home or go in a small box. A soft bag is a poor place for a dense textbook stack, and the rated load is 50 lb.
Count bags against the pack sizes you can actually buy. A 2-pack covers a light packer: bedding in one, clothes in the other. A 6-pack covers bedding, clothes, and towels for more than one student, with a spare for the trip home. There is no other pack size. Cobalt Blue and Barbie Pink can split two roommates who share a car. After the room is set, empty bags fold to about 10 × 7.1 inches and slide under a bed only if you measured 14 inches of clearance.
24 gal (91 L). 27 × 15 × 14 in. Rated 50 lb. Waterproof, not submersible. 2-pack or 6-pack only.
