How to pack clothes for moving

One room per bag, both zippers shut, and a label you can read in the truck. Books and dishes stay in a box.

How to pack clothes for moving in a zippered 24-gallon bag

How to pack clothes for moving is mostly a sorting job. Closets are soft volume, and a 24-gallon (91 L) bag measuring 27 × 15 × 14 inches holds a closet section without a cardboard box. The rated load is 50 lb. The shell is waterproof, not submersible, and packs are only a 2-pack or a 6-pack.

How to pack clothes for moving, room by room

Start with the bedroom you use every night. Leave tomorrow's outfit on a hanger. Everything else in that closet can go. Write the room on the label card before the bag gets heavy, so you are not hunting for a pen later.

  • Open both zipper pulls so the top lies flat.
  • Lay hanging clothes across the 27-inch length. Fold bulky knits in half so the stack stays even.
  • Put underwear and tees in the gaps along the sides.
  • Set shoes on top only if the zipper still closes without a fight.
  • Zip both pulls to the middle. If the teeth strain, take a layer out.

What stays out of a clothes bag

Books, dishes, tools, and canned food are dense. They belong in a rigid box even when you are packing clothes for moving day. A soft bag is for volume, not for a library. If a bag feels like more than you want to lift, it is already past a comfortable load. The rating is 50 lb, and you should lift with both wrap-around handles together, close to your body.

Damp gym clothes and wet towels should dry first. A zipped laminated bag holds moisture in, the same way a dry bag does. Waterproof means rain and dust stay off the outside. It does not mean the bag can sit in a puddle.

Color, labels, and the truck

Cobalt Blue and Barbie Pink are the two colors. Use one color for bedrooms and the other for the hall closet if that helps the crew. The label pocket faces out, so the room name is readable in a stack. Side handles are for pulling a bag out of a trunk, not for carrying a full load.

On the far end, carry the open-me-first bag in the car: a change of clothes, towels, and chargers. The rest can wait in the truck. Empty bags fold to about 10 × 7.1 inches, so you can keep them for storage after the clothes are hung.

The clothes are packed when every bag has a room name and the zipper is closed. Do a last walk of each closet. A forgotten sweater is easier to grab now than to buy again in the new place. Keep one 2-pack or 6-pack in the color you chose, and do not invent a third size. If you are moving more than one bedroom, the 6-pack is the one that covers clothes plus bedding without a second order.

A room order that keeps the load under 50 lb

Work through the home in the order you will unpack. Start with the bedroom you sleep in, then the kids' room, then the hall closet, then seasonal coats. Each of those is a soft pile. A 24-gallon bag is about the size of a closet section, not a whole wardrobe, so a full adult closet often takes two bags. Stop adding clothes when the zipper meets without a fight. If you have to sit on the bag, it is too full, and the 50 lb rating is the limit either way.

Hang tomorrow's outfit and one set of sheets aside before you start. Those ride in the car, in the open-me-first bag, with chargers, a towel, and any daily medicine. Everything else in that closet can be zipped. Fold knits so the stack stays even across the 27-inch length. Let the 15-inch width guide the fold. Shoes go on top only when the teeth still close. Wet workout clothes and damp towels dry first, because a closed laminated bag holds moisture against the fabric.

Color is a signal for whoever is carrying. Cobalt Blue for bedrooms and Barbie Pink for the hall closet is enough. There is no third color and no third pack size. A 2-pack covers one closet or a bedding set. A 6-pack covers the soft goods in a small home when books, dishes, tools, and pantry cans stay in cardboard. Side handles pull a bag out of a trunk. The wrap-around handles are the ones you lift with, both of them together, close to your body.

On the far end, empty bags fold to about 10 × 7.1 inches. Keep them. The same zipper that closed a closet will close off-season clothes later, as long as the bag stays off a wet floor. Waterproof means rain and dust stay outside. It does not mean the bag can sit in a puddle. Write the new room on the label before you stack, so the first night is unpacking, not a treasure hunt.

Rated load 50 lb. Waterproof, not submersible. 27 × 15 × 14 in, 24 gal (91 L). 2-pack or 6-pack only.
