How to pack for a PCS military move

Color-code rooms, keep the bags for the next orders, and don't assume a soft bag is accepted by base storage.

A PCS is a house move with a date you don't fully control and another move already on the horizon. The useful property of these bags is that you keep them. They are 24-gallon zip bags with wrap-around handles, side handles, and an outside tag card. They fold to about 10 × 7.1 inches when the house is empty.

Color and labels

  • One color per person or per room. Cobalt and Barbie Pink are the two colors. A mixed pack is on the product page.
  • Tag card: name, room, and whether the bag is for the truck, the car, or the unaccompanied shipment you pack yourself.
  • Do not rely on the color alone. Colors help from across a room. The card is what the mover reads.

What the bags are for on a PCS

Uniforms on hangers and civilian clothes, kids' clothes, bedding, and linens. The bag you will want on night one rides with you, not in the shipment. Books, dishware, tools, and house-hold goods that need rigidity stay in boxes your transportation office expects. We are not a substitute for their packing rules.

Between orders

Empty bags fold flat and come with you. Full bags can hold off-season clothes if you are allowed to store them that way. Ask housing or your transportation office before you assume a soft bag is accepted. Weight allowances and entitlements are theirs to explain.
